Do you know when you hear something on the news and think to yourself, that's interesting but won't be a problem for me? Well...........that's what I thought about cooking oil.
I understand now that you will be all shouting we knew there was a kinda world shortage due to the war in Ukraine, but I didn't truthfully join the dots until I went to purchase some this morning.
I tried several shops but the shelves were empty, I was beginning to panic as I use oil in my cake baking and this coming weekend will see me making in the region of 6 dozen cupcakes, not to mention the imminent birthday cake extravaganza for Leighton. I managed to get some olive oil and thought that I could possibly mix the two together if I ran short. So, on my way home, I tried the corner one-stop-shop at the top of the grove and to my surprise and delight, they had quite a few bottles of oil. They were priced at only £1 so they hadn't even put up the price to cash in on the shortage - result. I purchased 2 litres and headed home feeling like I was the cat that got the cream.
Okay back to Ely. We visited Oliver Cromwell's house which is within shouting distance of the Cathedral. It was very interesting and I have to say I did learn quite a few things about him that I didn't know. For instance that after he had died and was buried in Westminster Abbey, Charles the 2nd wanted to still punish him for having his father's head chopped off, so they exhumed his body and publicly hung him and then beheaded him - quite bizarre. All along the river walk, there were lovely places to sit and watch the world go by.
This afternoon I have been out in the garden cutting down a couple of trees, don't tell the queen as we are supposed to be planting them not cutting them down haha. I have to say these trees would defo not be on the queen's plantable trees list anyway.
Next, I washed my garden furniture ready for Sunday. Speaking of Sunday, I have also been putting together the last minute games and quizzes, not super onerous but very time-consuming.
Last night the guys in the street got to work putting up the bunting after the removal vans had left for the day. They worked through the drizzly rain which I thought was rather strange but they were on a roll and I didn't want to stop them. I was out giving directions and instructions (as you do) so that by the end the bunting was up and looking brilliant.
However, I had forgotten that I had put the mother units and my teas in the oven to cook, needless to say when I went back indoors the meal was very overcooked. We sat and attempted to eat it, both saying nothing until I finally said, "This is awful" to which mum replied, "It sure is but I wasn't going to say it haha". So we had extra supper during our card game last night to make up for it haha.
